The ratchet mechanism helps to properly crimp connectors: squeeze until the ratchet mechanism reopens the pliers, after which the connector is attached to the cable. This is ideal for when you don't often crimp network connectors. As a rule, you only need to strip the outer jacket of the cable; the wire pairs themselves do not need to be stripped.
